Just when we thought cuffing season was over and spring fever was about to hit the city, we got hit with some real #pandemicproblems. First it was sports, then it was concerts, then theater and dining out all were eradicated from our social calendars from now until … ?¿?¿?
If you’re already boo’ed up, congratulations. This is an amazing time to be in a relationship. Netflix and chill just got a revival.
Yet if you’re not in self-quarantine with a significant other, the good news is, all this free time means there are a lot fewer excuses for ghosting and being ghosted. (Well, you could try the whole “I’ve been busy” excuse, but…busy doing what exactly? We did hear that PornHub was doing well these days).
If you’re looking for an easy way to double up on streaming subscriptions, we suggest you get back on that dating app grind. While meeting up in person may be off-limits for the next few weeks, we’ve put together a list of 4 virtual dating ideas for social distance dating thanks to tools like texting and good old fashioned phone calls.
- FaceTime dating
Just because you can’t hit a restaurant for dinner at the moment doesn’t mean you can’t see your potential cutie face to face. If you’ve been texting back and forth with someone, why not suggest a phone call, or even better, a video chat so you can see one another while stuck at home? You’ll get to see them at their most authentic, so what’s not to like?
- Watch a movie
The nice thing about all these streaming subscriptions is that you can pause, rewind and watch again to your heart’s content. While the movie selection is a bit grim compared to TV cult classics, you can snuggle up over the phone while tuning into a documentary or feature film. To make things interesting, you can turn it into a drinking game (Forrest Gump, anyone?) or pause the movie at a halfway point for “intermission” so you can discuss your thoughts on what you’ve watched so far.
- Get vulnerable
You can learn a lot about someone before you meet them in person. Take a cue from Love Is Blind, but no need for the dark pods. To take things up a notch, try asking each other these questions from the New York Times. Supposedly they help strangers fall in love. Isolation seems like as good a time as any to give it a try.
- Get Gifting
If you’re already a few dates in at this point but still feeling the pressures of quarantine keeping you two apart, why not send each other a cute care package via Amazon’s trusty 2-day shipping? Set a spending limit, like you would for an office White Elephant/Secret Santa exchange, and go to town buying your potential new S.O. a few funny gifts to pass the time. Wondering what to get? You can try sending them your favorite book, an adult coloring book, or something weird and whacky that’ll make them laugh.
In any case, don’t be discouraged by social distancing. Just think, it saves a whole lot of money on the dinner dates, $18 cocktails and long-distance subway rides between Bushwick and Astoria.
